Family Travel Insurance

Compare Family Travel Insurance

Going on holiday with your family this year? While sand, sun cream, and suitcases might be the first items on your must-have holiday list, an essential that every family ought to have is travel insurance.

When travelling abroad, it’s essential to have family travel insurance to protect you if things go wrong, while providing extra peace of mind to enjoy your holiday. Most people buy a single trip travel insurance policy to cover them for their yearly holiday, but if you’re lucky enough to venture out twice or more a year, it could work out cheaper to buy annual travel insurance.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Whether you’re taking a year holiday or backpacking around the world, travel Insurance covers medical treatment should you fall ill or suffer an accident abroad. It also covers you to be transported home in an emergency.

This all depends on the provider and the policy you take out insurance with. The majority of travel insurance policies will cover the cost of emergency medical treatment abroad, including ambulance fees and hospital bills. Some will even cover you and a friend or relative to get home once you have finished treatment. Travel Insurance policies will also cover lost or stolen baggage and will also refund your trip if it needs to be cancelled or cut short for any reason.

Where Are You Travelling To?

When purchasing a travel insurance policy, you will first need to say where your policy should cover you for. Always make sure the country you are travelling to is covered. Travel Insurance providers will not cover you if you are travelling to a country that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) doesn’t consider safe. For more information, check the FCO website.

Many people believe they don’t need travel insurance if they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC card allows you to have medical treatment on the same basis as people who live in that country. However, it should never be used as a replacement for travel cover.  Not all European countries recognise EHIC and it doesn’t pay for getting you home or any other costs linked to your medical emergency.

It’s also worth noting that some countries outside of the EU, such as the USA, Canada and The Caribbean, will require extra cover for expensive medical bills.

Who’s Going & What’s On The Itinerary?

If you’re travelling as a family, then you’ll likely want to buy cover for all of you in a single policy. However, if your travelling as a family more than once this year, it might be more economical to buy annual travel insurance, which covers multiple trips within a 12 month period. For both policies, you will need everyone’s dates of birth and details of any medical conditions they might have for an accurate quote.

You may find that policies require additional add ons or separate cover depending on what you’re planning to do while abroad. If you’re planning on going skiing, snowboarding or a cruise, not all basic policies will cover you.

Skiing, Snowboarding or Extreme sports have an increased risk of injury and cruises will need specific elements, such as an emergency airlift to hospital. Always make sure you read the small print of your policy to ensure you’re fully covered.

Health Conditions & Travel Insurance

When purchasing a travel insurance policy, you will be asked a few questions about your health and the names of any medical conditions you currently have or previously suffered. Depending on your condition, your travel insurance may be more expensive as a health condition means you are more likely to need medical help while you are away. But this isn’t always the case with all conditions. Always remember to list any medical issues and give providers all the information they need. Failure to do so could mean being charged more by your provider or not being covered when you need it most.
